Recovery from Anorexia

The popular soap  is highlighting the challenging issue of Anorexia Nervosa. The character Priya is pregnant and shown refusing food and over exercising. There have been hints that she experienced difficulties with eating in her late teens. A realistic scene portrayed the extreme anger that is so often projected at family members when they voice concerns.

are campaigning for treatment waiting times to be reduced for mental health conditions including Eating Disorders. Currently within the NHS there is an 18 week target for physical health issues. Mental illnesses are no less serious, and should receive the same priority. b-eat ran a survey during summer and found that 30% of people waited longer than 18 weeks to access outpatient treatment, 26% had a wait of longer than 6 months, 8% longer than a year. The research also questioned young people who had suffered with an eating disorder whilst away at university; 69% had difficulties accessing treatment and 52% said their university was not taking action to prevent eating disorders such as raising awareness to help prevent the illness taking hold.

Recovery from Eating Disorders is a long and hard road with setbacks and relapses along the way but there is light at the end of the tunnel…It is so encouraging and heart-warming to hear stories like J’s a previous patient at

"It has only been just over two years since I last saw you and I am proud to say I am remarkably well! Making myself sick used to be a really massive problem for me… as I managed to push aside all those thoughts, it opened up so much and I have such an appreciation for life now, and myself.

When I was stuck in the eating disorder, it was so consuming I didn't have even the thinking space to consider the whole concept of relationships. You will probably be proud I have a much better relationship with my mum now. I think the main reason is due to my recovery. Now I have a job I really enjoy which is continuing to help me grow as a person.

I'm really glad I had your help. You had a huge positive impact on my life and I will always carry that, because when things do get more difficult than other times, I look back at the work I did with you and it makes it worth it and pushes me forward. :-) Jx"

In our early sessions together J could not even bring herself to speak; we spent many hours sitting together in silence – and now with such courage and determination she is healthy and enjoying life. This reminds us all that recovery truly is possible with the right support.
